Sheldon: How a Law Graduate Took on Insurance Greed to Treat Small Fiber Neuropathy

A story about living with immune-mediated small fiber neuropathy and dysautonomia

In the summer of 2023, Sheldon was at the peak of her career and social life, balancing a full-time job with rigorous study for the Bar exam. When she first felt numbness and tingling, she dismissed it as stress. But soon after the exam, those sensations turned into an agonizing, “on fire” burning throughout her limbs. After a year and a half of specialist visits and dismissed symptoms, Sheldon was finally diagnosed with immune-mediated small fiber neuropathy and dysautonomia.

Though she found hope when her doctors prescribed IVIG (intravenous immunoglobulin) to halt the progression of her nerve damage, a new nightmare began: the insurance battle. Despite four of her doctors recommending the treatment, her insurer denied it as “not medically necessary.” Sheldon exhausted every legal and administrative avenue, eventually taking her fight to the Virginia State Corporation Commission Bureau of Insurance. When the state upheld the denial based on the insurer’s arbitrary criteria rather than medical expertise, Sheldon faced a dehumanizing choice: succumb to the pain or find another way.

To survive, Sheldon’s parents began draining their retirement savings to pay $10,000 per infusion out-of-pocket, they have spent over $80,000 to give Sheldon back her life. The treatment has been transformative, reducing her pain and restoring her dreams for the future. Today, Sheldon is using her voice and her legal background to expose the “opaque” and “rigged” system of prior authorizations. Supported by the Infusion Access Foundation, Sheldon has transitioned from fighting in isolation to becoming a leader in a community that refuses to let insurance greed dictate the value of a human life.

"In the beginning, I often felt as if I was a burden to my parents, as though they would be better out without me. Over time, though, I realized those thoughts stemmed from the fear, stress, and despair I experienced while trying to navigate the prior authorization process. Although I’ve been able to work through these emotions, the dehumanizing nature of my experience with prior authorizations has had an indelible impact on my life …" - Sheldon
