Joshua: Why My Ulcerative Colitis Diagnosis Led Me to Medical School

A story about living with ulcerative colitis

When Joshua Samudre was first diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis (UC), he didn’t want to fight—he wanted to hide. Having never heard of the condition, he felt overwhelmed by the uncertainty it brought to his life. His initial response was to pretend the illness didn’t exist; he avoided appointments, took his medication sporadically, and tried to “wish his condition away.”

The turning point for Joshua came when he stepped out of isolation and began volunteering with the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. By connecting with others who faced similar hurdles, he realized that the things he thought isolated him were actually his greatest points of connection. This sense of belonging transformed his burden into a purpose. Joshua went from being too nervous to discuss his diagnosis to advocating for healthcare bills before Congress, fighting for legislative changes that benefit the entire chronic illness community.

Today, Joshua’s journey has inspired a new career path. Fueled by his experiences as both a patient and an advocate, he is currently pursuing a medical degree. Joshua plans to use the lessons learned from his most trying moments to become a compassionate healthcare provider who understands the patient experience from the inside out. His story is a testament to the fact that while chronic illness brings challenges, it can also provide the determination to make a lasting difference in the lives of others.
