Jawan’s battle with Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) began when he was just seven years old. For 13 years, he lived without a diagnosis, while doctors and family downplayed his agonizing symptoms as mere “boils.” It wasn’t until age 20, while a college student in Mississippi, that he finally put a name to his pain. Even then, he was met with generic advice and the false hope that he would “grow out of it.” Instead, by age 33, the condition became so aggressive that the “social butterfly” was left bedridden, eventually forced onto long-term disability as painful abscesses took over his body.
The struggle to find relief was only half the battle; the other half was fought against an insurance system that prioritized “alternative” medications over the biologics his doctor deemed necessary. Jawan recalls a terrifying period in 2023 when insurance denials forced him onto an alternative treatment that caused his flare-ups to skyrocket and triggered symptoms of Crohn’s and Rheumatoid Arthritis. To save his own health, Jawan had to switch insurance companies just to access the specific biologic that actually worked.
Today, Jawan is no longer suffering in silence. After a life-threatening experience where he burst an artery following surgery, his perspective has shifted from victim to protector. Having discovered a community of fellow “HS warriors” on social media, he is now dedicated to ensuring his younger sister—who was recently diagnosed—doesn’t have to jump over the same hurdles he did. Jawan’s message to insurance providers is clear: stop letting greed overtake compassion, because “you have the lives of patients in the palms of your hands.”
